Chigiri-e – Japanese Paper Art

Chigiri-e is a 1000-year-old Japanese art form that uses pieces of hand-dyed washi paper to create beautiful and detailed images. The result resembles a watercolour painting with a delicate texture. In this hands-on, creative workshop, you will practice handcrafting skills, learn step-by-step Chigiri-e paper techniques, and create a beautiful art piece to take home. All supplies included.

Presenter Bio:

Leanne Lai Hildebrand is an artist and pianist from Taiwan with a passion for using handmade paper to make beautiful things. She started learning the Chigiri-e art form 24 years ago and studied under several masters in Taiwan before moving to Vancouver with her husband in 2013. Her artwork was featured in a solo exhibition, Chigiri-E, the Language of Paper, at the Pendulum Gallery in Vancouver in February 2024, and her work was exhibited at the Harmony Arts Festival in 2018, 2019, and 2022.

She has taught chigiri-e at various places including the Nikkei Museum and Van Dusen Botanical Gardens. Her unique handmade cards can be found at various local flower shops in Vancouver.
