Chigiri-e Japanese Paper Art

Use pieces of hand-dyed washi paper to create a beautiful, detailed artwork that resembles a watercolour painting with delicate textures in this 1000-year-old art form of Chigiri-e! Practice handcrafting skills and learn step-by-step Chigiri-e paper techniques. No experience needed; all supplies provided.

About the artist

Leanne Lai Hildebrand is an artist and pianist from Taiwan with a passion for using handmade paper to make beautiful things. She began learning the Chigiri-e art form 25 years ago and studied under several masters in Taiwan before moving to Vancouver in 2013. Her artwork was featured in a solo exhibition, Chigiri-E, the Language of Paper, at the Pendulum Gallery in Vancouver in February 2024. She has taught chigiri-e at various places including the Nikkei Museum and Van Dusen Botanical Gardens.
