Artist Statement
Each panel is a story, and a short one because it’s only a small work. I see them as visual haikus, Tarot cards, dream fragments. They are complete in themselves—as metaphorical vignettes of my life and as an endless sequence of magical synchronicities. They are images that appear daily in my mind. They are the picture book of my life. They are hung in a random sequence.
Each panel is neither a memory nor an anticipation. It simply reflects the energy of your eyes at the very moment you see it. You give your attention, and in return, it gives you a story of your own.
Artist Bio
I have made and taught visual art in Victoria and Vancouver for over forty years. My art practice has included explorations into painting, drawing, and sculpture, and it is—and always will be—as fundamental to my life as breathing. Each piece I make becomes a deeply personal journey, an inner dance with those aspects of consciousness that are mysterious and elusive.
I approach each working surface in search of another disclosure of self, another chance to swim in the silence of a quiet mind, and another dance of joy with the creative process. My artwork explores abstracted and sensual visual metaphors, primitive, surreal, and distorted figures, and environments of whimsical angst. I leave the ‘about’ as open as possible so the viewer can participate and tell their own story.
My creative process begins with intuitive layers of paint, spontaneous mark-making using collage and mixed media, and the serendipity of gesture and brush. I work, and images appear. I make no initial plan or drawings. I have no expectations as to outcomes, and I enjoy the unexpected surprises of the stories that emerge.
I established the Visual Arts Department at Collingwood Secondary School in West Vancouver and led the department from 1988 until my retirement in 2010. I participated in annual conferences for art education and was a tireless advocate for all the arts in the education system. I was invited to sit on the BC Government Curriculum Development Committee for visual arts in education.
