Using flower parts and petals as a departure point, Burgers explores the process of decay, transformation and metamorphosis in her recent abstracted works on canvas and paper. A persistent theme in her work is scale. Rendered large she “views her subjects as a landscape seen from afar, where natural elements, time and movement move across the canvas.”
Known for her gestural and lush coloured flower portraits, the artists’ recent shift to a darker palette of deep blues, reds and greys that combine drawing and collage is an evocation of both the fragility and resilience of nature in our chaotic world.
In addition to paintings, Burgers works in a variety of media including ceramic and bronze. She also creates three-dimensional works that exhibit characteristics of both painting and sculpture that are built up using plaster, layers of paper, paint, charcoal and pencil.
Burgers' first solo show called Waterworks and Pathways took place at the Ferry Building Gallery in 1995 when she was only 19 years old. 24 years after this sold-out show, we are honoured to present the work of this West Vancouver and internationally-celebrated artist in the very same space.
Bobbie Burgers exhibits nationally and internationally and is represented by Equinox Gallery in Vancouver and Caldwell Snyder Gallery, California.
This exhibition is co-organized by the West Vancouver Art Museum and the Ferry Building Gallery for the Harmony Arts Festival.
