Introspection to Catharsis is a collaborative exhibition by artists Sue Daniel and Robert Karpa. This show explores the intersection of abstract painting and artificial intelligence, creating a powerful dialogue between human emotion and machine interpretation.

Sue Daniel’s deeply personal abstract works are in a constant state of evolution, shaped by life’s ongoing challenges. Her paintings emerge through slow, meditative processes and emotional impulses, layered spontaneously to create a conversation between control and surrender.

In response, Karpa introduces AI-generated interventions that appear to engage directly with Daniel’s visual language. With a background in editorial portraiture, Karpa brings storytelling to abstract art by creating AI-generated faces that reflect his interpretation of Daniel’s work.

Starting with a concept shaped by age, emotion, and atmosphere, he generates AI images, upscales them for large prints, and refines them in Photoshop. This fusion of technical precision and intuitive response creates a new form of portraiture, where technology meets traditional art in a shared exploration of meaning and emotion.

About the artists

Sue Daniel is a West Vancouver artist celebrated for her large-scale abstract oil paintings, created in her purpose-built studio. A self-taught painter, she sees art as a profound expression of life’s most cherished and challenging emotional experiences.

Drawing inspiration from the drama of nature and the intensity of lived experience, Sue works spontaneously and intuitively. Using brushes, knives, scrapers, and custom-made tools, she brings bold colour, energy, and movement to her expansive canvases. Her striking compositions evoke depth and mood through a dynamic balance of control and chance. Like the abstract impressionists before her, Sue approaches painting as a window into the soul—one best opened by embracing risk and spontaneity within a guided creative process.

As a portrait photographer and AI artist, Robert Karpa explores identity, perception, and abstraction. This series merges AI-generated close-up portraits with abstract paintings, blending human emotion with non-representational forms. The large canvases personify abstraction, inviting viewers to connect with the intangible through familiar faces.

Abstract art often defies definition, existing beyond language. By adding faces, Robert bridges this gap, offering an entry point for personal interpretation. The abstract forms evoke thought, memory, and emotion—like a dream—while faces anchor the viewer’s experience. Fascinated by how perception varies, Robert reflects on the elusive nature of inner worlds. Through AI and traditional media, he encourages viewers to engage personally with the work, exploring their unique interpretations.
