Carol Demers holds bachelor's degrees in biology and physiotherapy. While this may seem an unlikely starting point to an art career, both backgrounds continue to inform her work. She went on to obtain degrees in studio art and advanced ceramics at Capilano University.
Demers’ art is inspired by her daily hikes and ruminations in nature. Her Forest series paintings incorporate earth pigments, beeswax and tactile surfaces, expressing her visceral impression of the natural world. Her clay works are similarly elemental: organic forms that are coil built and burnished and then smoke fired. Earth, fire, air and water all represented in her artwork on view in Terra.
Fariba Mirzaie is an award-winning Vancouver-based fashion designer and textile artist. Originally from Iran, Mirzaie graduated from the Textile Art and Design Program at Capilano University in 1999. Fariba creates unique textile and wearable art out of non-traditional materials.
The power of nature to stimulate, harmonize and give insight are strong motivating factors for her. Working quickly in a stream of connections, she manipulates the structure of the fabric, printing, dyeing and embellishing to create strong organic forms in a natural colour palette. Through her work, Mirzaie’s intent is to convey harmonious love—something she feels is essential today.
